Due to the lasting impact of past wars, Vietnam has approximately 6.3 million people with disabilities, many of whom face significant barriers in accessing public services such as education and healthcare.
Among them, an estimated 2 million individuals have hearing disabilities. To address this issue, we have been collaborating with the Post and Telecommunications Institute of Technology, Vietnam (PTIT) since 2023 under the International Collaborative Research of APT Program, focusing on the development of a sign language learning system utilizing image recognition technology.
We are currently developing AI-powered features that enable users to search sign language dictionaries, analyze videos to evaluate the accuracy of sign language, and enhance learning and translation capabilities on both smartphones and PCs. This initiative aims to improve the quality of life for people with hearing disabilities, particularly those in rural areas who are unable to attend specialized schools due to distance.
To realize a truly inclusive and sustainable society, it is essential to promote and expand such initiatives globally transcending differences in culture, education, and ICT infrastructure.
