Wireless LAN pilot project in the Republic of the Philippines

In 2006, for the necessity of marine conservation and the education of rules in the Republic of the Philippines, for the increase of profitability in the fishery industry, and for the improvement of the quality of education (level of teachers) on islands, the Foundation applied for APT to realize a pilot project for building a wireless LAN network that would traverse the island, and we implemented the project. Co-sponsors on the Philippines side were the Department of Information and Communications Technology led by the National Telecommunications Commission of the President's Office, University of the Philippines (Manila and Cebu), Bantayan City Government, Santa Fe City Government, three schools, Marine Resource Conservation Center, and Waseda University in Japan.

For wireless LAN devices, we installed CFO-SS devices (small output of 10 mW or less) developed by KDDI Lab. at six locations, mainly on Bantayan Island in northeastern Cebu Province. The devices were cascaded and connected, and the total transmission line with a length of approximately 31 km was connected via broadband LAN network. We built a network for accessing the Internet on the island by connecting IP phones, servers, web cameras, etc. to this network and interconnecting it with the Internet line in the municipal office. We promoted the project together with six local computer-related universities, and the project contributed to improving the level of computer technologies among teachers and students.
