Pilot installation of WiMAX for optimizing user access networks and the operation of the networks in rural areas of the Kingdom of Bhutan (three locations, verification of three technologies: WiMAX, WiFi, optical fiber cables) (2012)

In collaboration with Bhutan's Ministry of Information and Communications, we conducted a project of pilot installation and demonstration/evaluation on a broadband network suitable for mountainous areas of Bhutan. In three rural areas, we built pilot Internet connections by using optical fibers, WiMAX networks, and WiFi handover networks, and conducted a proof-of-concept and evaluation of broadband communication technologies, the construction and operation technologies of broadband applications, and the effective utilization of them. Based on our achievements and knowledge accumulated through the construction of these networks, proof-of-concept, evaluations, and operation and maintenance, we will promote ICT measures such as measures for the future expansion and improvement of broadband networks in the Kingdom of Bhutan, and we will promptly improve the construction/operation technologies of communications companies.

State-of-the-art WiMAX equipment is installed. A village that communicates can be seen in the distance. Although a manufacturer went bankrupt before the end of the project, we managed to finish the project so that the networks could be used continuously.
In collaboration with KDDI Engineering, we installed WiFi devices in villages in tourist areas and connected them to schools.
In a hillside village of a mountain, optical fiber cables are used, which can be wired with a simple burying method. Also, a stable high-speed line has been opened by simply including media converters, with no settings required.
