Creation of livelihood opportunities and culture preservation via sustainable and eco-friendly ICT telecenters in the Marshall Islands (2013)

Previously, only voice communications by shortwave radio were available between Mejit Island and the capital city Majuro, so advanced communication methods were expected. In this project, we connected between Mejit Island and Majuro by combining satellite communications (DAMA) and GSM mobile communications for very few lines (a few lines), which is an application of inexpensive femto base station perfect for remote island communications. We then ensured availability of voice communications from the island and data communications such as Internet access, and conducted a demonstration for allowing local people to use various applications effectively.
