Demonstration research on flood disaster early-alarm devices using M2M and cloud technologies in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (2014)

In the mountainous area (Quang Nam Province) of central Vietnam, there has been an extreme increase in the amount of precipitation due to abnormal weather and deforestation, so river disasters occur frequently. In such a mountainous area, the installations of observation systems and alarm devices were behind schedule. So, we conducted the proof-of-concept and research of a system by combining advanced products and services that could be obtained in Vietnam so that the system could be introduced at low cost and used continuously. This system consists of sensors, solar power generation, data acquisition/generation devices, alarm signals based on data analysis and thresholds, alarm generation devices, and networks (narrowband network and mobile data network) for connecting them.

A village where sensors are installed. The river normally flows gently, however, when a flood occurs, it changes suddenly and the flood swallows people and the village.
When the same village is in flood, persons are catching fish alongside the rescue work. Not only alarm devices, but disaster prevention education is needed too.
Installed sensor
Alarm device installed at a downstream location
Meteorological devices donated to schools, etc.
We held a workshop for persons involved in disaster reduction work in Quang Nam Province. We eagerly discussed continuous operations with them.
